What is Social Transportation?
- Social transportation is moving people to and from their daily activities. Any activity that is not medical.
Who is eligible?
- Anyone who is 55 years of age or older
- Individuals who can get in and out of the vehicle with little or no assistance
- Individuals who use walkers and canes (assisted devices must be foldable)
- Anyone living in areas bounded by Eglinton Avenue W. to the south, Wilson Avenue/ Albion Road to the north, Kipling Ave to the west and Keele Street to the east – these are only boundaries for where your ride starts not a limit as to where you can go
- Individuals living outside of the catchment area are at our discretion
- Calls are first come first serve we will always try to accommodate we may ask you to be flexible on a pickup time or return time
Reasons for using our Social Transportation
- You don’t drive
- You drive but don’t like to drive at night or in the rain/snow
- The bus is not very convenient or accessible for you
- You don’t qualify for wheel trans
- Cabs are too expensive
- YWALC has clean safe vans
- YWALC has professional, friendly and courteous drivers
- We are not able to move furniture or offer courier service
What the drivers can and will do for you
- Offer you a comfortable, clean, safe ride with heat/AC
- Fold and stow any assisted devices
- Carry your walker up or down the front steps for you
- Stow any light bags or groceries and help you to the front door with them if necessary
- Place a step at the van door for you if you require it
- Driver will always wait until you are in your front door
What is required of you?
- One time intake form – we need to know a little bit about you like if you have any medical conditions we should know about/ emergency contact info and you will sign a liability waiver.
- You pay the driver before they start your trip exact cash or cheque or through our Centre by credit card (you must call in advance – drivers do not take credit cards.
- We will tell you the cost of your trip when you book
- Rates are 0 to 5km $10.00 / 5.5 to 10.5km $15.00 / 10.5km to 20km $25.00 (all one way, per person, subject to change with notice)
- Caregivers and PSW’s/etc. ride free of charge
- You do not tip the driver
- Call early enough so we can accommodate you. We are often able to do last minute trips but we don’t like to disappoint anyone.
- Give us 24 hours notice to cancel if possible so we can accommodate someone else.
- Book with Dave between the hours of 8:30am to 2:30pm Monday to Friday.
- Try to give the full address of the place you are going, we often can find the address for you but we will need the correct name of the place you are going ie the real Canadian superstore or Northwoods community centre.
Additional Covid-19 Protocols
Screening
- Upon arrival at your home, the driver will complete the COVID pre-screening form prior to you getting into the van.
- If the driver deems that the member is safe to enter the van, then the ride will continue.
- If the driver deems that the member is not fit to enter the van, then the ride will be concluded.
Entering the van
- Masks must be worn at all times, while in the van and when engaging with the driver
- You will supply your own mask. A mask will be provided at a charge if you do not have one
- Door to enter and exit the van will be opened/closed by the driver only
While you are in the van
- Seatbelts must be worn
- Windows will be open to encourage air flow, when possible
- DO NOT use the ventilation system if you have access to it
- Masks must remain on at all times
Drop off/Pick up at Grocery store
- Driver will open/close door for you to enter
- Driver will place groceries in the van
- Driver will return shopping cart
Final drop off point
- Driver will open van door for you to exit
- Driver will place groceries on veranda/outside building door
- Payment will be given to driver in exact change
