A message from the Board President,
Vera Nazareth

Hello YW members

I hope you can find time to read another blurb from me and are not too busy Zooming!!
Yes, Virtual Programming through Zoom has been the buzz word in most of our homes......a word we never heard of or used just a couple of months back. Just last week I was chatting about Zoom with another YW member in my apartment lobby when a young lad who was listening to us asked if we were really talking about Zoom and was impressed we old ladies were using Zoom everyday.

We are now into week 12 of the pandemic and, thanks to York West we have our days filled with Instructional Programs. These classes are going strong and we are seeing new faces in classes and it’s awesome!  We realize we have some work to do with offering social programs and our Program Committee is working on enhancements to social programming. We have had two very successful events by zoom: Mother's Day Tea and a Zoom Lunch last week. It was so good to see the joy on our members' faces when they saw and greeted their friends after so long. Do look out for Danna's newsletter notifying you about another exciting lunch planned for June and not to be forgotten – our Canada Day virtual celebration.

Good News: Instructional programs will continue through June, July and August – and all FREE for members!!
Good News: The $5 membership increase which was to be effective June 2020 has been deferred to January 2021.
The above two points were agreed upon by the Board of Directors in the May meeting.
Thanks to your kind generosity after the appeal from our Fund Raising Chair – Debby, the Board of Directors approved free programing and supporting our instructors through until the end of August.

If each of us who participate in zoom classes can remember what it costs us during program registration, we can reach deeper and help York West.
It is not too late if you haven't as yet made a donation to send a cheque to York West at 1901 Weston Road; or, follow the link

Lastly, a million thanks to Suzanne, Danna, Allegra, Rocio, Bonnie, Joanne and Dave who have all stepped out of their comfort zones and taken on a new challenge: keeping York West running virtually!

Keep up the good work – kudos to each of you for your enthusiasm and teamwork.
Enjoy the good weather and I do hope each of you can have some outdoor fun whilst keeping social distancing. Stay safe and be healthy!

What is Virtual Programming

YWALC will be using the virtual platform called Zoom.  Get a head start and download the software on your computer now! Click on Zoom Client for Meetings and follow the instructions.  On your smart phone or tablet, go to the App Store, search zoom and follow the steps.

YWALC will be using this platform as well as phone lines, for virtual programming so that we are able to provide the opportunity for participants to join in on fitness, health and wellness programs, educational lectures, brain-stimulating activities, join in on general conversations, and make new and meaningful friendships – all from the comfort of home!  It works the same as attending a program at the centre, but instead it is facilitated over your home computer or telephone.

Some of the Basics

  • Currently we will be offering the programs for free during this trial period however if you have an extra toonie laying around why not start a toonie pile for your classes and then when we are open, you can give us your stock pile
  • You can access the software through your current computer or phone, phone users will have audio only
  • You will need to register with a staff member – YWALC members are given first preference
  • Email the staff facilitator listed on the schedule
  • Preference will be given to members who have participated in programs previously
  • Each session will last 30 – 60 minutes
  • Each session may include up to 15 members
  • During instructional programs there will be time to chat before the program or during a scheduled break, you will not hear each other while the instructor is leading the program
  • There will be growing pains as we launch this format, please be patient, we will get through this together and we will attempt to get as many members engaged in some kind of program as possible.
